Job Title:  Instructional Designer II

Job Description:  The Instructional Designer analyzes business needs and designs, develops, implements, and evaluates world-class learning/education solutions for the training organizations within the Sempra Energy Utilities as well as other organizations/departments within the integrated utilities.
- Technical Skills – the ability to use the procedures, techniques, and knowledge of a specialized field.
- Analyzes business needs, identifies training and performance support needs, recommends training and non-training solutions as appropriate.
- Researches and collects course content and identifies learner requirements, including conducting literature research, focus groups, and interviews.
- Conducts needs assessments, research, and maintains client contact for training programs and evaluations.
- Determines course objectives and assesses the most effective instructional method(s) to achieve objectives.

- Designs, develops, and implements instructional systems and processes including learning objectives, content outlines, training curricula, training job aids, simulations, role-plays, leader (instructor) materials, student materials, workbooks, evaluations and multi-media training material.
- Revises and updates training materials in response to changes in policy and procedures, and/or based on results of needs analyses.
- Develops and monitors project plans.
- Interpersonal Skills – the ability to work with, understand, and motivate other people, as individuals or in groups.
- Identifies environmental and cultural factors that influence learning, attitudes, and job performance.
- Delivers training as part of a (train-the-trainer) session or a pilot of a new course, as needed.
- Participates in or leads progressively more complex design projects, including computer based, web based, management development, technical training, and performance support projects/initiatives.
- Consults with clients to diagnose and analyze training related problems or needs.
- Collaborates with graphic artists, desktop publishers, and other designers.
- May lead and direct the work of other designers, subject experts, etc.
- Demonstrates a wide degree of creativity and latitude.
- Conceptual skill – the ability to coordinate and integrate all of an organization’s interests and activities.
- Identifies stakeholders and the nature of their involvement.
- Reviews and recommends purchase of training materials when appropriate.
- Links design efforts to business unit and SEU goals and business objectives.
- Designs instructional systems and processes that reflect an understanding of the diversity of learners and groups of learners.
- Ensures that safety is integrated into all instructional interventions.
External Qualifications:  Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Technology, Educational Psychology, Communication or a closely related field. Masters degree preferred. Instructional design background/certification and/or three years experience as a classroom instructor. Experience working with subject-matter experts and vendors. Corporate work experience preferred. Must possess a valid drivers license and be willing to travel within Southern California
- Strong written communication skills required for writing/editing training materials that are clear, concise, and grammatically correct.
- High degree of interpersonal communications for negotiation, counseling, team leading, interviews, and presentations.
- Project planning and management skills essential for the numerous team projects.
- Creative and conceptual skills required to understand a myriad of ideas and problems and to create multiple solutions using theories and concepts.
- Ability to develop skills needed for specialized equipment and leading edge training tools and technologies.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Self-starter who can work with limited supervision.
- Current on emerging training and transfer of training methodologies with the ability to apply these developments in instructional design and related fields.
