Aug. 2011 – The US House of Reps extends for another 20 years the rights of cultural communities to secure a certificate of title to their ancestral lands.
Republic Act 8371, aka as The Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act of 1997, indigenous peoples have until 2017 to claim their right to own their ancestral lands.
“HB 3747 amends Section 12 of RA 3747, which was enacted into law in October 29, 1997, to give the indigenous peoples another 20 years to secure titles for their lands”, Rodriguez said.
